What is polyurethane? What are the characteristics and uses of polyurethane?

Polyurethane (PU), full name polyurethane, is a polymer compound. Polyurethane was first developed in the 30s of the 20th century, developed by German scientists, German scientists polycondensed liquid isocyanate and liquid polyether or glycol polyester to form a new type of material, the physical performance parameters of the material are not the same as the polyolefin material at that time, scientists named it polyurethane. The main raw materials of polyurethane include diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), toluene diisocyanate (TDI), and polypropylene glycol (PPG).

Polyurethane can be divided into two types according to the molecular structure, one is linear type and the other is body type. In the body structure, due to the different density of crosslinking, the performance of polyurethane can be between hard and soft, with high strength, high wear resistance and solvent resistance. Polyurethane materials have a wide range of applications and can be used in various fields of national life, such as the following:

1. Polyurethane foam material

Polyurethane foam materials can be divided into rigid, semi-rigid and soft. Rigid polyurethane materials are often used as building thermal insulation, thermal insulation materials, bedding, sofas, air conditioners, etc., and can also be used as roof materials for automobiles, aircraft, railways and other means of transportation.

2. Polyurethane waterproof material

Polyurethane waterproof material is very convenient to use, can be mixed on site, after coating at room temperature moisture curing, our common runway, park floor, heat insulation window frame, etc. are inseparable from this material.

3. Polyurethane biomedical materials

Polyurethane has excellent biocompatibility, so the current application of biomedical materials to polyurethane is also very extensive. It can be used in artificial pacemakers, artificial blood vessels, artificial bones, kidneys, etc.

In addition to the above, polyurethane can also be used as furniture coatings, architectural coatings, and can also be used as adhesives in automobiles, shoes and other industries.
